A couple of times a month I plan to share an eclectic list of favorites. I’ll have everything from recipes, quotes, to books and movies.

Homeschool moms everywhere know extra time is preminum. My children now range in age from 14 to 25. Two are in college and two are high school homeschoolers. Things have not slowed down with their age — I think life has sped up! This is a good time to learn new hobbies and pick back up some of the old ones. My goal is to hold myself accountable and enjoy some things I’ve slacked on over the years.

What are your favorite things? I would LOVE to hear from you. Two of the books shared today are recommended favorites from two friends.

Watching

Taste of Country
No, it’s not the magazine. It’s a series about a single mom of 4 girls running an event planning business on her working farm, South Pond Farms. The food is simple (most grown on the farm) and the setting beautiful. It’s not an over-the-top show. Infact, the barn where most catered events are held is not heated. Located in Pontypool, Ontario, the series is family friendly and highlights everyday ingredients with spectaular results. I’m hoping Netflix adds more seasons! Check out South Pond Farms.
Brain On Fire
My husband and I watched this movie based on the true story of New York Post journalist, Susannah Cahalan.  Early in her news reporting career Cahalan suffered from what looked like drug, alcohol, and physical exhaustion. Within a one month time span, Cahalan went from being a dedicated reporter to hearing voices, hallucinations, and seizures. Doctors repeatedly misdiagnosed her condition that turned out to be… well, you watch and find out! This is a great movie in my opinion. If you like mystery, drama, and a real-life episode of House, you may enjoy this movie, too. Brain on Fire has some language and adult situations.

Reading

The Nazi Officer’s Wife: How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust by Edith Hahn Beer with Susan Dworkin
Edith Beer’s story is simply incredible. Young, educated, and about to sit for testing to become a judge, Edith’s life changed drastically when Vienna fell to Hitler. Beer lived underground for a period of time where she received invaluable help that led to her new identity in Munich.  Ultimately, Edith fell in love and married a young man in the Nazi Party. Ms. Beer did what she had to do to survive and protect those she loved. It’s a hard, first person story of survival during World War II. Friend, Kristy Bruce, posted on Facebook how much she was impacted by The Nazi Officer’s Wife. I saved it to my to-read list and checked it out at the library. The Nazi Officer’s Wife is a book I highly recommend.
Dancing Through Darkness: The Inspiring Story of Nazi Death Camp Survivors, Cham and Selma Engel by Ann Markham Walsh
A love story like no other I’ve read. Two inmates at Nazi death camp, Siobhor, are forced to dance together. That dance led to an escape and life on the run.  My friend, Kristie Markham, after months of telling me I needed to read this incredible true story, let me borrow her copy. I learned much from this first-person account of the Holocaust – an excellent read.

Apps

Fetch Rewards
This is my favorite grocery app. All I do is take a picture of my grocery receipt to earn points to trade in for gift cards. Fetch is an easy and convenient app to use. I do not have to scan a product bar code for any items or use only certain stores. I’ve been using Fetch for about 8 months and have earned a little over 25,000 points. I’m getting better at consistently using Fetch weekly.  My points translate into $25 gift cards to places such as Amazon, iTunes, Bath & Body Works, and a slew of restaurants, including Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks. Gift cards can be choosen at the 5,000 point level or points saved for cards with larger amounts. One thing I do not like about Fetch is there is a limit to the number of receipts scanned in a 14 day period. I try to scan grocery store and Wal-Mart receipts first followed by all others to receive the maximum number of points.
Fetch is offering 2,000 refferal points ($2 in points!) if you sign up. That means I receive 2,000 points and you receive 2,000 points. All you do is download the app, Fetch Rewards,  and use my code: DA5NC. Next, send your code out to friends to get your own referral points! Remember, at 5,000 points you’ve earned a $5 gift card of your choice! The app is free to download and super simple to use.
McDonald’s
McDonald’s has announced Free Fries on Friday through the end of 2018. Customers can receive a free medium size fries with a minimum of a $1 purchase every Friday by using their online app.
* Affiliate links included. This means that if a purchase is made using one of my links, I receive a small % back on the sale. It is not an added cost to what is purchased, just a % the vendor blesses me with for sharing their products.
